Picking A College

You survived bullies in grade school, the awkward years in junior high, and now you face your junior year in high school. Time to take the SAT and or ACT and pick a college for your higher education. Advise for where to go will come from, parents, teachers, friends, etc. It can be overwhelming, so use these following guidelines.

1. Concentrate on getting the best grades in school this year. These will be the last grades the colleges or universities will see on your transcript. Study hard and don’t give up.

2. Take the SAT and ACT as many times as possible during your junior year. Your grade should improve and will in turn increase your chance at getting into the college of your choice. If your having trouble, take a study course in your city or online.

3. Look online at the websites for colleges you might be interested in. If your not sure, there are many websites that will give you suggestions based on your area of interest, Also, ask your high school counselor for possible choices.

4. If your parents or other family memebers went to college, they probably want you to go to their college. This is not a bad idea, because some universities look favorably at alumni relatives.

5.  Take a road trip and visit the colleges of interest. Many campuses have actual weekends you can visit to talk to students and professors. You will also get to look at the dorms, classrooms and classroom facilities to help you make your choice. Really though you can go any time, just contact the school and let them know your coming so they can give you a tour and information packet.

6. Talk to your family about money for college. If they are going to help or if you are going it alone, this will play an important role into what college you can afford to attend. There are financial aid packages for all the colleges, so don’t cross off a choice just because you don’t think you can afford it. You never know.

7. Apply for every scholarship that you are qualified for. Enough said.

8. Attend a local college during the summer or for the first two years to reduce your overall expenses. Take the basic required courses that will transfer and stay at home to save money.

When I picked my college it was based more on where my buddies were going and I could get into any one I wanted to. Not because I was a genius but because in those days if you could afford it you could go. Times have changed and the competition for the university of your choice could be tough. Do your homework, so to speak, and you will attend the place of higher education of your dreams.
