Summer Jobs Prepare Students for Life after University

Being a student is a time of great personal growth and learning. However, there are a number of people who believe that, on occasion, an academic experience doesn’t fully prepare students for the life that awaits them. Some degrees offer opportunities for work experience, or some hands-on, on the job action but there are many others that are comprised mainly of independent research or a number of lecture series. It has been argued that students who study book-learning intensive subjects are not exposed to the practical skills that they will need to enjoy a successful business career.

It is possible that these practical skills can be taught in a classroom to an extent, but employers are generally looking for proof in the abilities of a candidate – either in the form of trusted references or a track record. Therefore it makes sense for students to take on some extracurricular work during their studies, to ensure they have an advantage once they have graduated and are entering the job market.

Yet this also poses a problem for students. There are many people who believe that working part time during a course of study – as many students choose to do – is hazardous to their chances of obtaining good grades. However, the very nature of university courses tends to offer the perfect solution – an extended holiday in the summer months.

Lots of students choose to fill this time by taking either a paid job or work experience in their chosen field. This then allows students to gain valuable experience without having to work in a way that it is negatively impacting their studies. Many students also find that going back to university after a summer spent working leaves them feeling fired up and enthusiastic to get stuck into learning again.

Not only do students who work during the summer enjoy the chance to develop skills outside of the classroom, but many also find that earning extra money comes in handy too. Obtaining a degree can be an expensive process, from food and accommodation to reading lists and travel there are a number of ways for students to find their funds drained.

A summer job can help students take care of these costs and ensure that they can procure the books and equipment they need to study successfully. For example trainee barristers will be happy to purchase the law books they need prior to the arrival of loan checks so they can have a head start on their year’s reading while those studying art will be glad of extra cash to purchase materials. When students choose to take employment over the summer, they will be going back to university both financially better off and rich in newly acquired practical knowledge.
